CHAPTER SIX
As the van turned off the road and parked near a boat ramp on the Brisbane River, Brayden reached for Decemberâs hair, pulling her head back and grabbing her throat. âNo funny business, bitch. Just get on the boat and keep your mouth shut.â
As much as she would have liked to have given him a smartarse answer, she didnât need him to think she had any fight left in her. Listening to his bullshit was enough to make anyone feel like cutting their own ears off, but his sob story about the bitch heâd cheated on her with and the kid theyâd had was as pathetic as it got. At least until you realized he hadnât used the experience to reflect at all. Instead, heâd decided all his problems were the fault of women everywhere. âJust get on with it.â
âWhat, youâre not going to cry?â
Her Mum was dead. Despite what he claimed, she was certain she was being manipulated into a second season of Sole Survivor, and they were taking her to a final showdown with the Ark people and a metric fuckload of the mutant koalas. Turning on the waterworks would be pretty easy for most people. Right now, she couldnât have done it if sheâd wanted to.
âNo words?â
She shook her head.
The back doors of the Sandman opened. The guy with the camera was already waiting outside, filming as Brayden shoved her out of the vehicle.
One of the other men had climbed into a moored tinnie and started the engine. A drone flew overhead, hovering above them, recording the scene. She ignored it.
Brayden stepped out of the Sandman, still holding onto her hair. This was the moment sheâd been waiting for. She pretended to stumble. As he staggered with her, she stomped her heel down on the bridge of his foot and ran.
There were shouts behind her. She felt a hand brush her ankle and fingers trying to close around it. This time her tackler couldnât get any purchase and she ran for the road.
The drone tailed her.
She seemed to be somewhere on the south side. She had to get back to her Dad. Heâd be worried sick, but with these dickheads still chasing her, she couldnât follow the roads. The trees on the verge rustled as the river breeze whispered through the leaves.
The sandmanâs engine roared as it spun back onto the tarmac. Brayden leaned out the passenger window, pointing the gun. He levelled it at her and fired a shot.
December wasnât sure whether he meant to miss, but she wasnât taking any chances. She piss-bolted for the nature strip and the cover of the trees.
As soon as the cool shade of the bush engulfed her, she regretted her decision. Every rustle in the canopy was a monster. Every creaking branch held a baying predator ready to rip her to pieces. Every fluttering bird was a drop bear charging towards her.
Casting furtive glances, she pressed towards the light on the other side of the thin strip of bushland.
